This is my second article exploring ways to improve writing. The first article explored my personal struggles with writing consistently, road blocks that I face and ways to overcome them. Although these are personal, many writers experience the same difficulties. Each of us has our own unique story, but the overall themes are transcendent.

This article is a brief reflection on ways I am working on improving my writing (besides the obvious advice of writing and publishing more often!)

4 Ways to Improve Writing

1. Read more

The more a writer reads, the better the exposure the person has to different writing styles and perspectives. It allows one to gain a greater understanding outside of our narrow view point. This advice applies to more than just improving writing skills; reading is a way to improve ourselves overall as people.

2. Share your writing

It’s challenging as a young or inexperienced writer to share your work with others. Being vulnerable to criticism is difficult, but constructive feedback is necessary to determine ways to improve writing. Of course, it’s very possible to receive contradictory, and even conflicting feedback about writing styles or opinions on one’s work.

3. Find inspiration

Go online to find writing prompts to cure the infamous writer’s block. There are so many options available to create the inception of an interesting story. Find what works best for the individual- there are so many possibilities available at the end of an online search.

4. Discover groups of like-minded folks

Check out local groups focused on the type of writing. Meet Up is a classic example of a social media platform dedicated to matching up people who share interests. Check out the notice board of the local coffee shop, bookstore or café for independent groups.
